Researchers at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Policy Lab and the University of Pennsylvania have been tracking and forecasting the spread of COVID-19 across 384 U.S. counties with active outbreaks, and found cases appear to be spreading from the south to the north on major roads, CNN reported. These include the I-5 (the West Coast’s main north–south Interstate Highway), the I-10 (stretching from Santa Monica, California, to Jacksonville, Florida), as well as the I-95 (the main Interstate on the East Coast), and the I-85 in the southeast (running from Montgomery, Alabama, to Petersburg, Virginia)....

The VA reported that 6,772 patients in its care have died from COVID-related complications since last March. That’s more than the combined deaths from Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-2010) and Operation Enduring Freedom Freedom (2001-14), where the Defense Department (DoD) lists 6,756 total military deaths. Not included among the VA’s COVID death total are another 95 employees who contacted the virus in recent months and also died from complications. The DoD doesn’t say which areas of the clinics or hospitals where those employees worked, nor how they came in contact with the virus, according to Military Times....

England’s chief medical officer, Chris Whitty, on Wednesday urged the public to scale back their Christmas plans to prevent the spread of the highly transmissible variant. Wednesday’s number was about 10,000 higher than the previous peak in daily infections reported in January. Whitty said that Britain is being hit by “two epidemics on top of each other” and that people should treat social activity at Christmas with caution. “People should be prioritising those things, and only those things, that really matter to them,” Whitty told a press briefing....

The incident took place at Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster, a city in Los Angeles County, California last week, KABC reported. Sheriff’s deputies told the station that a man in the hospital’s COVID-19 unit brutally beat his roommate, an 82-year-old man, with the oxygen tank on the morning of December 17. The victim of the attack died the next day. The two men did not know each other, according to the station, and investigators are working to determine the motive for the attack....
