The U.S. Treasury Department’s final report for fiscal year 2020 showed a record $3.1 trillion deficit for the year, with debt held by bondholders totaling $21 trillion. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimated that federal debt this year will total 102% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP)—the value of all goods and services produced in a year. But the CBO’s estimate may be optimistic. Preliminary figures peg this year’s federal debt at about 136% of GDP....
Thursday saw a record 39,327 new infections across the country with the states reopening the earliest bearing the brunt of the increase. While some states are pushing ahead with reopening following the shutdown, Texas, Florida, California, Arizona and North Carolina, have announced tighter measures to mitigate the disease’s spread. An examination of 8 million calls made to helplines across 19 countries, published by Nature on Wednesday, illustrated the impact of the pandemic on mental health around the world. Swiss and German researchers who conducted the analysis looked into suicide-prevention and crisis counseling helplines in 14 European nations, the U.S., China, Hong Kong, Israel and Lebanon. Using data from the first 12 weeks of the pandemic in 2020, the researchers determined that the number of calls was highest at six weeks and 35 percent higher than calls fielded during the same period in the previous year, the Associated Press reported....
Jason Kelk, 49, has been at an intensive care unit in the English city of Leeds since March 31 2020. He is thought to be one of the longest known COVID patients in the U.K. Sue Kelk, his wife, told U.K. broadcaster Sky News he has been experiencing “fainting attacks” for the first time in the past week. Doctors do not know why Jason has been losing consciousness. According to data from the COVID Tracking Project, cases in New York have continued to rise over the past few weeks, placing the state close to its earlier peak numbers from April. The data shows that on Wednesday, the state reported 10,600 new cases of the novel virus. The state’s 7-day average number of cases has also continued to increase, with 9,832 as of Wednesday. In comparison, New York recorded its highest single-day uptick on April 15 with at least 11,571 new cases, according to the COVID Tracking Project....
